Volcanic rock associated with effusive eruptions of acid magmas, that are richer in silica, sodium, and potassium, then the basaltic magmas, therefore more viscous. Rock generally light gray in color, compact and fine-grained, where it is possible to observe small crystals of the mineral plagioclase.

It is the most common rock in the built heritage of the city of Angra do Heroísmo, often painted or plastered, as it alters very easily (''rotten rock''), starting to present a saccharoid texture (similar to sugar).
