Volcanic rock associated with explosive and very violent eruptions, often dependent on the formation of volcanic calderas. It is mainly composed of small fragments of pumice, dispersed in a finer matrix, compressed and stretched due to the advance of the incandescent material.

It is the most common rock present in the built heritage of the city of Praia da Vitória and of the flat lands of Ramo Grande, where important quarries thar are now deactivated are located, these quarries provided stone for the built heritage of Terceira Island.
